There are so many studies about Facebook, and how damaging it is to people who are addicted to it.
But what makes me laugh...and cringe....is the way women use it to fish for compliments. Let's say I post a picture of myself......
There has been study after study about this. Women particularly use Facebook as reward-motivated behaviour, which turns on dopamine in the brain------not unlike an addictive drug.
Let's just take a look at the comments to a few women when they posted pictures of themselves.
Let's just take a look at the comments to a few women when they posted pictures of themselves.
All of the women in this sample are people I know, and are in their mid-fifties to mid-sixties. Some are fairly well-preserved, others much less so. But none are great beauties (not even when they were younger). Here are the real comments FROM A ONE-WEEK SAMPLING of three women....let's call them Lynn, Nancy, and Susan:
"Beautiful lady!'
"So beautiful"
"Pretty lady"
"You are so beautiful inside and out"
"So much inner and outer beauty"
"You [and your spouse] could not be any cuter"
"You [and your spouse] are bona fide Beautiful People!"
"You're de-aging----you look stunning"
"You look like a magazine cover"
"Lynn, you're beautiful"
"Gorgeous"
"You vixen"
"Beautiful"
"Gorgeous"
"You look so beautiful"
"Gorgeous"
"I think you're aging in reverse"
"Beautiful woman"
"Who's that girl? Beautiful"
"How come you don't look any older?"
"Stop showing off!"
"Beautiful"
"Very beautiful"
"U look maaaavelous"
"Pretty lady"
"Pretty lady"
"Too pretty"
Kind of wants to make you stick your fingers down your throat, doesn't it?
Can we STOP this madness? We are raising a generation of girls who are using these women (grandmothers all) as examples to which they should aspire! These women and their Facebook "friends" are teaching our young women that compliments on their looks are what counts.
